Ian Cumming is a teacher with long experience, having taught students ranging from very young beginners, through advanced students, to retirees in their eighties.

Ian is a registered adjudicator for MSBOA Solo and Ensemble, and is a founding member of the Chelsea Chamber Players.

Ian studied violin and viola at the Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne, Australia.  He then joined the Elizabethan Melbourne Orchestra, playing for The Australian Opera and The Australian Ballet.  He held positions as a viola player, and later as a violinist.

He went on to work free-lance for some years, during which he was regular Principal Viola in the following orchestras: Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Kelmyer Orchestra, Australian Pops Orchestra, Astra Orchestra, Astra Chamber Orchestra, The Tudor Choristers, The Melbourne Chorale and The Melbourne Musicians.  During this period he also gave solo recitals, played in many TV jingles and film scores, and was a tutor for the Australian National Music Camp Association.  He was also involved with the Institute of Early Childhood Development annual operetta productions, for which he tutored and led the student orchestra, and arranged, reorchestrated and composed original music.

During this period Ian was a member of early music group Ars Nova, playing treble viol in the group, and giving lecture/demonstrations.

After this, Ian became a permanent member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.  He also continued to be very active performing and tutoring chamber music.
